With a 5 year old daughter at home, I don't normally stay out until last call.
So, I had no idea what I was getting into when I needed to hail a cab at 1:30 in the morning.
It was simply impossible.
We were in the Financial District in Boston and there were hundreds of people competing for just a few cabs on the road.
It reminded me of the show Survivor. Whoever could outwit, outsmart and outlast the others would win the ride home...the rest would have to walk.
My husband and I thought we could outsmart the others by heading to a waterfront hotel. They could call a cab for us, right?
Not so. "At that hour, the cab company's don't answer their phones," we were told by a concierge. "The drivers are tough...and won't pick up just anybody.
Dressed in jeans...no ride. Live nearby...forget about it." "But we promise to tip well" we exclaimed. "Sorry" he said.
And, so, we walked. We had no other choice. Two miles and one hour later, we were home. My feet throbbing from walking along cobble stone sidewalks wearing high heels...my husband, grumpy.
I'm frustrated. But, should I be? Or should I have sympathy for the cab driver's who are likely stiffed by drunk riders at that time of the night.

A rich yuppie can't get a ride home - boo-hoo.
TheEliteOne, 3 months ago | FlagYou were smart to go to a hotel. You should have gone to the Langham over at Franklin Street. The cabbies line up there late at night.
The car service suggestion
is a good one, but you are going to run into the same problem if you wait until the last minute. Most car services are going to have minimums. esp. late at night. Cabbies cannot refuse a fare, no matter what you are wearing or where you are going. Unless if the cabbie has been working more than 8 hours and close to ending the shift.
Refusal of a fare can lead to major problems by the hackney division.
Cabbies do get stiffed and not just for the tip, for the whole fare. Next time in town, the hotels to grab cabs at are: The Langham, Taj, Four Seasons, Mariott Copley. The better cabbies line up here.

Since when is your husband not grumpy.
jovanone, 3 months ago | FlagShould you have sympathy for cab drivers? Why????
Cab companies don't answer their phones.
Don't pick up just anybody.
Don't pick up people in jeans.
Don't pick you up if you live nearby.
Aren't cab companies supposed to provide a service? Where's the service? Most of these guy's are rude, crude and don't speak English, and I'm wondering how many are illegals? Not to mention all the fair increases.
Sympathy? Feel bad for yourself,y
our husband and your SORE FEET!!
